FDA Approves New Pill Doubling Pancreatic Cancer Survival

Patients battling advanced pancreatic cancer now have a powerful new weapon in their fight, thanks to a groundbreaking pill approved this week by the FDA.

The drug Rasonque showed remarkable results in clinical trials, helping patients live a median of 13.2 months compared to just 6.7 months with standard chemotherapy. That nearly doubled survival time represents a major leap forward for a cancer that has historically been extremely hard to treat.

The once-daily pill works by targeting RAS proteins that fuel tumor growth in most pancreatic cancers. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, this medication attacks the specific mechanisms driving the disease.

"Today's approval provides a critical new option for patients facing an extraordinarily difficult and historically hard-to-treat cancer," said Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas. The approval came more than six months ahead of schedule, reflecting the urgency of bringing this treatment to patients.

Revolution Medicines tested the drug in 500 adults with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma who had already received at least one prior treatment. The results impressed FDA scientists enough to fast-track the approval process.

Even before official approval, the FDA allowed eligible patients to access the drug through an expanded program starting in May. That early access gave hope to patients running out of options.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough touches thousands of families each year. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma accounts for roughly 90% of the 67,000 new pancreatic cancer cases diagnosed annually in the United States.

The cancer forms in cells lining the pancreatic ducts and often spreads before doctors can detect it. Treatment options have remained limited for decades, making this approval particularly significant for patients and their loved ones.

Common side effects include rash, diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue, which doctors say are manageable compared to the benefits. Patients should discuss risks and benefits with their oncologists.

Dr. Angelo de Claro, director of the FDA's Oncology Center of Excellence, called the results "unprecedented in an area of high unmet need." His team's commitment to rapid review helped bring this life-extending treatment to patients months earlier than expected.
