Medical device filtering blood cells in hospital intensive care unit treating sepsis patient

FDA Fast-Tracks New Sepsis Treatment for Critical Patients

Mind Blown

A medical device that calms dangerous inflammation could finally give doctors a way to fight sepsis, the condition that kills nearly one in three hospital patients. The FDA just granted breakthrough status to speed its path to approval.

Every year, sepsis affects 1.7 million Americans and contributes to nearly one in three deaths in hospitals, yet doctors have no FDA-approved treatments that tackle the real killer: runaway inflammation that destroys organs even after infections clear.

That might soon change. SeaStar Medical just received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for its therapy that filters out inflammation-causing cells in critically ill sepsis patients.

The device, called Selective Cytopheretic Device therapy, works like a specialized filter for blood. It removes the overactive immune cells that trigger the dangerous inflammatory response sepsis patients experience, potentially stopping organ damage before it becomes irreversible.

"Sepsis remains one of the most challenging conditions we face in critical care, in large part because treating the infection does not necessarily stop the dysregulated immune response that drives organ injury," said Dr. Kevin Chung, SeaStar Medical's Chief Medical Officer.

The FDA grants Breakthrough Device Designation only when a treatment shows potential to address life-threatening conditions more effectively than existing options. The designation fast-tracks development, testing, and approval review.

SeaStar's therapy is currently being tested in the NEUTRALIZE-AKI trial with 339 adults who have acute kidney injury in intensive care units. The trial specifically tracks outcomes for patients with sepsis or sepsis-like conditions over 90 days.

The Ripple Effect

This marks the seventh breakthrough designation SeaStar's technology has received across different conditions, including acute kidney injury, cardiac surgery complications, and kidney disease. The company already has one FDA-approved product: Quelimmune, which treats life-threatening kidney injury from sepsis in critically ill children.

If the sepsis therapy succeeds in trials, it could transform critical care by giving doctors their first tool to directly address the inflammatory storm that makes sepsis so deadly. That would mean fewer families losing loved ones to a condition that currently has no targeted treatment.

For the millions who face sepsis each year, hope is being filtered through to the other side.
