Fela Kuti and Sade Join Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Two of Nigeria's most influential artists are getting one of music's highest honors, proving that great art transcends borders and genres.

Fela Kuti, the revolutionary creator of Afrobeat, and Sade Adu, the smooth voice behind timeless hits like "Smooth Operator," have been selected for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2026. The announcement came Monday night during American Idol, bringing long-overdue recognition to both artists.

Fela will be inducted in the Early Influence category, joining legends like Celia Cruz and Queen Latifah. The Nigerian musician, who passed away in 1997, changed music forever by blending traditional African rhythms with jazz, funk, and political activism. His children will accept the honor on his behalf at the November 14 ceremony in Los Angeles.

Sade, now 67, earned her spot in the Performance category. The British-Nigerian singer has sold over 50 million albums worldwide with her distinctive blend of soul, jazz, and R&B.

The Hall of Fame recognizes artists who released their first recordings at least 25 years ago. More than 1,200 international music industry experts voted from a list of 17 nominees, alongside fans worldwide.

The Ripple Effect

This recognition highlights how African artists have shaped global music culture for decades. Fela's 1976 album "Zombie" was already inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025, and he received a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in February.

The ceremony joins an incredible class that includes Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, and Wu-Tang Clan. It will air on ABC and Disney+ in December, introducing new generations to these pioneering voices.
