Ferrari Consulted NASA to Perfect Its First Electric Car

Ferrari just proved that making a car faster isn't always the hardest part. Making it comfortable at extreme speeds? That takes rocket science.

The Italian automaker is preparing to launch its first electric vehicle, the Luce, and turned to an unexpected partner: NASA. Ferrari's engineering team wanted to answer a crucial question: at what point does lightning-fast acceleration stop being fun and start disturbing the human brain?

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna told reporters that electric vehicles can accelerate so powerfully that "sometimes it's disturbing to our brain." The company conducted medical studies alongside its NASA collaboration to find the sweet spot between exhilarating and overwhelming.

The concern wasn't just theoretical. Vigna explained that too much acceleration leaves passengers simply waiting "for the time to stop the acceleration" rather than enjoying the drive.

Despite this careful calibration, the Luce won't be slow by any measure. The electric supercar will generate over 986 horsepower from four electric motors and sprint from zero to 62 mph in 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of 192 mph.

Ferrari also brought in creative firepower for the project. The company partnered with LoveFrom, the design collective founded by Sir Jony Ive, Apple's former design chief, to craft the cabin interior. Early reveals show a thoughtful blend of technology and tradition, featuring physical buttons and switches instead of relying solely on touchscreens.

The car will pack a 122-kilowatt-hour battery and include high-tech features like independent rear-wheel steering and the active suspension system borrowed from Ferrari's Purosangue SUV and F80 supercar.
