Fiji Grad Fulfills Dream Her Mother Couldn't Reach

When Sereana Tuigaloa walked across the graduation stage at Fiji National University this week, she carried two dreams with her: her own and her mother's.

The 21-year-old from Vatulele earned her Bachelor of Education in Primary Teaching on May 11, becoming the second person in her family to graduate from university. She's the fourth eldest of seven siblings, raised by a mother who worked as a kindergarten teacher but never had the chance to pursue higher education herself.

Watching her mother teach sparked something in Sereana. She saw the passion and dedication it took to shape young minds, and she wanted that path for herself. But wanting it and achieving it turned out to be very different things.

"I thought it was going to be easy, but things became hard," Sereana admitted after the ceremony at FMF Gymnasium in Suva. The demands of university life hit harder than she expected, especially managing her time and keeping up with coursework.

There were moments she questioned whether she'd make it through. But she kept thinking about her mother, about the opportunity she now had that her mother never did.

Why This Inspires

Sereana's story shows how dreams can travel across generations. Her mother couldn't finish her own education, but she planted seeds by becoming a kindergarten teacher anyway and encouraging her daughter to go further.

Now Sereana stands as proof that those seeds grew. In a family of nine, she's helping pave the way for her five younger siblings to see what's possible.

Her advice to other students facing tough times comes straight from experience: "Keep on going no matter how hard it is. It will be worth it in the end." She knows because she lived it, pushing through the exhaustion and doubt to reach graduation day.

The ceremony brought together family and friends who watched Sereana transform years of late-night studying and early-morning classes into a degree. Her mother was there too, seeing her own unfulfilled dream come alive in her daughter's achievement.

Sereana will now enter Fiji's classrooms as a primary school teacher, continuing the family tradition her mother started but taking it one step further.
