Finland Defender Wins Gold, Eyes Stanley Cup Next

An 80-year-old woman started crying tears of joy on a Helsinki street this week when she saw Nikolas Matinpalo walking by with the World Championship trophy.

The Ottawa Senators defender had just helped Team Finland win their fifth gold medal at the IIHF World Championship, defeating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime. Fighter jets escorted the team home, and over 80,000 fans packed Olympic Stadium to celebrate.

"The whole country getting crazy and being together and celebrating together, it was awesome," said the 27-year-old, who played all 10 tournament games. Matinpalo has become a regular on Finland's national team over the past two years, playing 26 games across two World Championships, the 2025 4 Nations Faceoff, and the 2026 Olympics.

Growing up in hockey-crazy Finland, this was the dream. The country of just under six million people lives and breathes the sport, and bringing home gold means everything to fans from elementary school kids to grandmothers.

The tournament took place in Switzerland, with group stage games in Zurich. "Very, very nice city," Matinpalo said, praising the food, people, and weather during the two-week competition.

Why This Inspires

Even with a gold medal around his neck and a childhood dream fulfilled, Matinpalo isn't satisfied. "The goal is to play in the Stanley Cup Final someday," he said, noting that's where he'd rather be this time of year.

The defender plans to spend a couple weeks recovering in his home country before training resumes. He's already thinking about September, when he'll return to Ottawa for training camp with a Senators team that's made the playoffs twice and is ready for the next level.

"We have a very good group of guys," Matinpalo said. "I think we can now take that next step."

His personal goals are just as clear: move the puck better and rack up more points. For someone who just achieved what millions dream of, he's already focused on the next mountain to climb.
