Finland Grants €28M to Satellite Maker ICEYE's R&D Push

A Finnish space technology company is about to make keeping Earth safer a whole lot easier, thanks to a major government investment in innovation.

ICEYE, a Helsinki-based satellite manufacturer, received €28.3 million from Business Finland to complete its research and development program. The grant supports the final phase of a major government commitment to help the company advance its synthetic aperture radar technology, which captures high-resolution images of Earth regardless of weather or darkness.

The timing matters. As European nations strengthen border security, maritime monitoring, and disaster response capabilities, space-based intelligence has become essential infrastructure. ICEYE's satellites provide real-time situational awareness that helps governments protect citizens and respond faster when crises strike.

The company's growth trajectory tells a remarkable story. Since 2018, ICEYE has launched 72 satellites and recently hit a production milestone of one satellite per week. That pace puts them on track to manufacture 100 satellites annually by 2028, with 25 launches planned for this year alone and more than 50 in 2027.

Their software-defined satellites capture commercial radar imagery with resolution up to 16 centimeters and can observe areas extending 400 kilometers wide. Research teams will enhance sensing capabilities, improve data collection methods, and develop AI-driven analysis tools that turn raw satellite data into actionable intelligence. ICEYE is also partnering with European command and control system integrators to combine information from multiple sources into unified intelligence products.
