Finland Wins Hockey Gold on Overtime Goal by Helenius

For more than 70 minutes, neither team could score a single goal in the most important hockey game of the year.

Then Konsta Helenius broke free and delivered Finland its first IIHF World Championship gold medal with a stunning overtime winner against host Switzerland on Sunday. The final score was 1-0 in a game that had fans holding their breath until the very end.

The 20-year-old Buffalo Sabres forward unleashed a wrist shot that sailed past Swiss goaltender Leonardo Genoni, setting off a massive celebration from the Finnish team. Helenius had just come off a playoff run with the Sabres before joining his national team for the tournament.

Finland's path to gold required beating two powerhouses in back-to-back days. On Saturday, they defeated Canada 4-2 in the semifinals, holding off superstars Sidney Crosby and Macklin Celebrini with stellar defensive play.

In the final, Finnish goaltender Justus Annunen was perfect, stopping all 22 shots he faced. The defense was equally impressive, killing off a two-man disadvantage without allowing Switzerland any real scoring chances.

This victory means even more because of who was wearing the captain's armband. Aleksander Barkov tore his ACL last September and missed the entire NHL season with the Florida Panthers.

Doctors cleared him just in time for this tournament, which began about a month after the NHL regular season ended. Instead of watching from the sidelines, Barkov led his team to gold just months after leading them to Olympic bronze.
