Finland's Birding App Creates World's Best Species Tracker

A free smartphone app in Finland is turning everyday nature lovers into powerful citizen scientists, creating breakthrough predictions about bird movements that update every single day.

The Muuttolintujen Kevät app (Spring of Migratory Birds) collects around seven million bird observations annually from more than 300,000 users. These everyday birdwatchers simply record songs and log sightings, while artificial intelligence handles the identification of over 250 bird species.

Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä and Duke University combined this flood of citizen data with supercomputer processing power to build something remarkable. Their new prediction model, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, can anticipate even tiny shifts in bird occurrence almost instantly.

"When combined with long-term bird survey data and land use information, the continuous flow of citizen science data creates an exceptionally valuable resource," says Academy Professor Otso Ovaskainen. The system processes observations daily using supercomputers at Finland's CSC IT Center for Science.

The old way of tracking birds relied heavily on skilled experts, with distribution maps updated only periodically. Now anyone can contribute meaningful data regardless of their bird knowledge, and predictions refresh every 24 hours.

This breakthrough opens doors far beyond birding. The same approach could track changes in other wildlife populations, help identify environmental threats earlier, and guide conservation efforts with unprecedented speed and accuracy.

By spring 2026, developers aim to release an upgraded version with even more features for public use. The app remains free to download, and its AI recognition algorithms keep improving with every observation logged.
