Firefighter Adopts Feisty Kitten He Rescued from Car Engine
A Yorkshire firefighter took home the spunky kitten he helped rescue after the tiny cat led the crew on a wild chase through two car engines. Smokey the kitten is now settling into his forever home with three adoring kids.
Sometimes the toughest rescues lead to the sweetest endings.
Gary Hughes was just doing his job when he responded to a call about a trapped kitten in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, on February 26. But by the end of the day, the 47-year-old firefighter had become a cat dad.
The rescue started when Hughes and his crew heard desperate miaowing coming from inside a car's engine compartment. The tiny kitten kept darting back and forth, hiding under plastic skirting and slipping through their fingers.
Hughes managed to grab the kitten once, but it wriggled free. Then the cat went silent for 20 minutes, and the firefighters couldn't figure out where he'd gone.
The answer? The clever kitten had snuck past all of them and climbed into a different car's engine entirely.

When Hughes' colleague Steve finally caught the little escape artist, he lifted him triumphantly in the air like a scene from The Lion King. The kitten immediately thanked him by peeing all over him and scratching him to pieces.
Despite the "absolute runaround" and serious attitude, Hughes fell in love on the spot. He decided right there he wanted to adopt the kitten, but first had to wait to see if anyone claimed him.
When veterinary staff asked for a name, Hughes panicked and blurted out the only fire-related name he could think of: Smokey. The vet clinic staff had their own nickname for him though. They called him Spicey.
Sunny's Take
Smokey is now home with Hughes, his wife, their three children, and two other cats. The kids absolutely adore him, though Hughes' daughter got a bit nervous when Smokey started hissing during introductions.
Lucy Smith, a nurse at Peel Veterinary Clinic, says they often see cats who've gotten stuck in car engines. When no owners come forward, the clinic staff frequently adopt them. One nurse went from zero cats to three in just a few months.
For now, Smokey is being kept separate from the family's other cats while he settles in. But given his adventurous spirit and the Hughes family's patience with his spicy personality, this feisty little fighter has found exactly where he belongs.
