Firefighter Adopts Kitten He Rescued From Car Engine
A Yorkshire firefighter who rescued a feisty kitten trapped in a car engine fell in love on the spot and brought him home. Despite Smokey's sassy attitude and his tendency to hiss, the Hughes family is smitten with their newest member.
When Gary Hughes responded to a call about a trapped kitten in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, he had no idea he'd be going home with a new family member.
The 47-year-old firefighter arrived on February 26 to find a tiny kitten wedged deep inside a car's engine compartment. For nearly an hour, the crew listened to desperate mewing as the kitten darted back and forth, just out of reach.
Hughes managed to grab him once, but the slippery little escape artist wriggled free. Then the kitten went silent for 20 minutes, leaving the firefighters puzzled and worried.
That's when they discovered he'd sneaked past everyone and climbed into a second car's engine. When his colleague Steve finally caught the kitten and held him up triumphantly, the tiny feline responded by peeing all over him and clawing him thoroughly.

Hughes knew immediately he wanted to adopt the kitten, describing him as "so small and lovely" despite his feisty personality. He just had to wait to make sure the kitten didn't already have a home.
Put on the spot to name his new friend at Peel Veterinary Clinic, Hughes chose Smokey as the only fire-related name he could think of quickly. The vet staff had their own nickname ready: Spicey, in honor of his memorable attitude.
Sunny's Take
Smokey is now settling into the Hughes home, though he's being kept separate from the family's two other cats for now. The three Hughes children absolutely adore him, even if the youngest gets a bit nervous when Smokey starts hissing.
Lucy Smith, a nurse at the veterinary clinic, says they often see cats in similar predicaments. Many end up adopted by the very people who rescue them or treat them, including one nurse who went from zero cats to three in just a few months.
For Hughes, the chaotic rescue and the kitten's spicy personality only made him more lovable. Sometimes the best family members are the ones who choose you right back.
