🦸 Hero Alert

When a postal worker's hand became trapped in sorting machinery late at night, North Reading firefighters arrived within minutes and carefully freed her after 30 minutes of precise work. Their training and quick thinking turned a scary situation into a successful rescue.

A 60-year-old postal worker went home safe Monday night thanks to the skilled work of North Reading firefighters who freed her hand from industrial mail sorting equipment.

The North Reading Fire Department responded to the USPS Middlesex/Essex Processing and Distribution Center at 11:23 p.m. on June 15 after the woman's hand became wedged between a conveyor belt and metal sorting tray. Engine 3 and Ambulance 2, staffed by Captain Brian Nash and firefighters Nick Carney, Matthew Enos, Chris O'Hara, and Bridget Leahy, arrived within minutes.

The team faced a delicate challenge: freeing the trapped worker without causing further injury. They carefully cut and disassembled parts of the conveyor belt and metal frame, working with precision in a high-pressure situation.

After about 30 minutes of focused effort, they successfully freed the worker. A Burlington ambulance transported her to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center for treatment.

Why This Inspires

This rescue showcases the breadth of skills firefighters maintain beyond fighting fires. Captain Nash highlighted how his team's diverse training prepared them for exactly this type of technical rescue.

"As firefighters, we train for all manner of technical rescue and extrication, and our firefighters relied on the tools of the trade and fell back on their training to conduct a safe and successful rescue," Nash said.

The late-night emergency also demonstrates the around-the-clock readiness of first responders. While most people slept, this crew was alert, prepared, and able to solve a complex problem that required both technical skill and steady hands.

Their quick response time and methodical approach meant the worker spent minimal time trapped and received medical attention fast. Training that often happens behind the scenes proved its worth when seconds mattered.

When emergencies strike, preparedness makes all the difference.
