Firefighters Free Trapped Teen, Rescue 3 River Floaters
Valley Regional Fire Authority crews saved four people from Washington's Green River in two separate rescues during one remarkable week. From freeing a trapped teen to coordinating a multi-agency kayak rescue, firefighters showed up when it mattered most.
When a 15-year-old slipped while fishing and got his foot wedged under rocks in the Auburn river, firefighters knew every second counted. Within minutes of the May 26th call, crews arrived to find the teen standing in shallow water just offshore, unable to free himself.
A firefighter quickly moved two large rocks pinning the boy's foot and safely guided him back to shore. His grandmother waited on the bank while his father rushed to the scene, and fortunately, the teen walked away without serious injuries.
Just three days later on May 29th, firefighters faced a more complex challenge when multiple people in the Green River near Dykstra Park started struggling to stay afloat and calling for help. The current was pushing them downstream fast.
Valley Regional Fire Authority crews coordinated with Auburn Police, Puget Sound Fire, and South King Fire & Rescue to track the floaters' movement. Swiftwater rescue technicians positioned themselves downstream at Brannan Park, anticipating where the current would carry the three individuals.

Using kayaks, the rescue technicians paddled out and safely brought all three people back to shore. One person needed treatment for minor injuries and mild hypothermia before being transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center.
The Ripple Effect
These rescues highlight how regional fire departments work together to protect communities along Washington's waterways. The coordinated response between multiple agencies meant faster action and better outcomes for people in danger.
Training swiftwater rescue technicians and maintaining specialized kayak equipment requires significant investment, but weeks like this prove why it matters. When currents turn dangerous or accidents happen near water, these skilled crews make the difference between tragedy and triumph.
Both families got to bring their loved ones home safe, a reminder that behind every emergency response are real people grateful for the firefighters who show up ready to help.
