Firefighters Save Blind Horse Trapped in Swimming Pool

When firefighter John Evans got the call Tuesday night, he thought he'd heard wrong. A horse in a swimming pool?

But in Lower Providence, Montgomery County, that's exactly what he found. A blind horse had somehow ended up in a backyard pool, and darkness was falling fast.

Evans, a 21-year volunteer with the Lower Providence Fire Department, knew this wouldn't be a typical rescue. Animal calls are rare in his two decades of service, and this one required a different approach entirely.

As a police officer held the struggling horse to keep it from slipping deeper into the water, Evans focused on something crucial: winning the animal's trust. "We won't hurt ya," he told the frightened horse again and again.

Then Evans had an idea. He grabbed hay bales from nearby and moved them to the edge of the pool, using them to coax the horse toward safety.

It worked. "I reached over. It moved, walked to me, so I'm like, 'He wants to get out,'" Evans recalled.

With the horse finally cooperating, Evans teamed up with police officers and fellow firefighters to pull the animal from the water. "County rescue complete," a responder announced as the horse stood safely on dry ground.

The team quickly dried off the horse and checked him for injuries. Despite his ordeal, the animal appeared unharmed.
