🦸 Hero Alert

When flames tore through six homes in Cochrane's Heartland community, firefighters didn't give up until everyone was safe, including one furious feline. The injured firefighter is recovering at home, and the rescued cat is expected to make a full recovery.

A house fire that damaged six homes in Cochrane, Alberta on Thursday evening ended with an unexpected hero moment: firefighters pulling a soggy, angry cat to safety.

Cochrane Fire Services rushed to the Heartland community around 6:30 p.m. after flames began spreading across multi-family residential buildings. Deputy Fire Chief Jared Wallace says crews worked fast to contain what became one of the largest fires the town has seen in over a year.

"Firefighters worked extremely quickly to contain the bulk of the fire and prevent any further spread," Wallace said. The quick response paid off: no residents were hurt, though several families had to temporarily relocate to local hotels.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury during the response and was treated at Cochrane Urgent Care Centre. Wallace confirmed he's now home recovering well.

The timing made things complicated. Some Cochrane crews were already battling a brush fire in nearby Rocky View County when the call came in, but they quickly switched equipment and joined the fight. Multiple fire departments from the region, including Calgary Fire Department, Rocky View County Fire Services, and Redwood Meadows Emergency Services, worked together to knock down the blaze.

The Bright Side

Near the end of the operation, firefighters found a frightened cat trapped in one of the damaged units. The animal was wet, understandably upset, and whisked straight to a veterinary hospital in Calgary for treatment.

The cat is expected to make a full recovery. It's a small victory in what was otherwise a difficult evening for the displaced families, but sometimes those small victories matter most.

The Canadian Red Cross, Cochrane Family and Community Support Services, and Cochrane Victim Services are now helping affected residents find temporary housing and support. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Wallace praised his team's readiness despite these types of fires being rare in Cochrane.

Sometimes the best news comes with whiskers attached.
