Feel Good

When flames erupted in a third-floor Jamaica apartment, an orange tabby made a daring leap to safety before firefighters climbed up to rescue the terrified feline. The cat is now back home safe with its grateful owner.

A quick-thinking cat escaped a burning apartment by jumping to a neighboring ledge, where firefighters plucked it to safety Thursday morning in Jamaica, Queens.

The FDNY received the emergency call just after 10 a.m. on October 15, reporting heavy fire conditions at a three-story building on 89th Avenue. Engine Company 289, Tower Ladder 127, and Battalion 50 arrived within minutes to find smoke and flames pouring from the top floor.

"There were smoke and flames coming out of the top floor," a neighbor told reporters. "The firefighters started working quickly and the fire went out quickly."

The department dispatched 21 units with 79 firefighters and EMS personnel to battle the blaze. As crews worked to control the flames, they spotted an orange and white tabby that had leaped from the burning third-floor apartment onto a ledge of the building next door.

Firefighters from Tower Ladder 127 immediately shifted focus to the shaken feline. They climbed up to the ledge and carefully rescued the cat, who was understandably rattled but unharmed.

Meanwhile, other crews deployed two hose lines and knocked down the main body of the fire. The blaze was under control by 10:27 a.m., just 27 minutes after the initial call.

Sunny's Take

The best part of this story came after the rescue. Firefighters reunited the orange tabby with its owner, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the crew that saved his beloved pet. Photos from the scene show the emotional reunion, a firefighter standing beside the relieved owner cradling his cat.

No injuries were reported among residents or firefighters. Building searches came back negative, confirming everyone got out safely.

FDNY fire marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze. The quick response and professional work of the 79 emergency personnel prevented what could have been a much worse outcome for both people and pets in the building.

Sometimes the smallest rescues mean the most to those involved.
