Firefighters Use Jaws of Life to Rescue Trapped Marmot

Mother's Day took an unexpected turn for firefighters in Oliver, British Columbia when they received an unusual emergency call about a very stuck rodent.

A marmot had somehow squeezed itself between two concrete barriers near the ball diamonds at Oliver Community Park and couldn't get back out. The trapped animal was making enough noise that a passerby noticed and alerted Parks and Recreation, who called the fire department around 10:30 a.m.

Fire Chief Ash Regner put out a call for volunteers, and several firefighters quickly stepped forward. They arrived with the department's rescue truck, ready to tackle a situation unlike the typical emergencies they face.

The rescue crew pulled out serious equipment to free the frightened marmot. They used rescue airbags and auto extrication spreaders, commonly known as the "jaws of life," tools typically reserved for freeing people trapped in car accidents.

The firefighters carefully created enough space between the concrete barriers for the marmot to escape. With a little encouragement, the rodent scurried away on its own, appearing completely uninjured despite its ordeal.

There's something wonderful about watching trained emergency responders apply their life-saving skills to help even the smallest community members. These firefighters could have easily dismissed a trapped marmot as someone else's problem, but they saw a creature in distress and acted with the same professionalism they bring to every call.

The whole rescue took about 20 minutes once the crew developed their plan. Now the concrete barriers have been pushed tightly together to prevent other curious critters from getting into similar tight squeezes.

This small act of kindness on Mother's Day shows that compassion knows no bounds when someone needs help.
