First Marmot Adoption Success: 13 Rescued, All Released

When a mother marmot and her nine babies hitched an accidental ride from the mountains to an Aurora post office, rescuers had no idea they were about to make wildlife history.

The furry family had made a den under a shipping container at the post office earlier this month. Staff at Boulder County's Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center quickly trapped all ten marmots after several close calls with vehicles and reunited them safely.

The journey hadn't been kind. Many of the marmots had burned feet from hiding in a hot vehicle engine during their unplanned trip down from the mountains. The mother was also severely malnourished and needed time to recover before she could care for her large family.

While the Aurora family healed, Greenwood received four orphaned marmot pups from Winter Park. The staff saw an opportunity no one had successfully attempted before.

They carefully introduced the four orphans to the recovering mother. Against the odds, she accepted all four babies as her own, making it the first recorded successful marmot adoption in captivity.

Wildlife rehabilitators usually struggle to place orphaned animals, especially species like marmots that aren't well studied in rescue settings. By simply being in the right place at the right time, these four orphans got a second chance at life with a real family.

The Aurora mama, already caring for nine of her own, somehow found room in her heart for four more. That kind of compassion isn't limited to humans.

On Monday, all 13 marmots received clean bills of health and were released together into Staunton State Park near Conifer. Park rangers chose a location far from any roads, ensuring this adventurous family won't accidentally go on another road trip.

The park also runs a marmot monitoring program, so researchers will be able to track how well the blended family adapts to their new mountain home. Early signs suggest the pups are bonding well and the mother is healthy enough to guide them all through their first winter.

What started as a dangerous situation for ten stranded animals ended with 13 marmots getting a fresh start in protected wilderness. Sometimes the best families are the ones we choose.
