Flanders Neighbors Drop Everything to Help Grieving Woman

A woman in Flanders, New York, woke up to two emergencies: her mother had died overnight, and a snowstorm had trapped her at home, unable to reach her family in Long Beach.

She turned to social media with a desperate plea for help clearing her driveway. Susan Tocci saw the post and immediately called her brother Paul Tocci and nephew Tom Podlas, who had been plowing snow for 24 hours straight.

The crew didn't hesitate. They left a paying customer mid-job and rushed to the woman's home with their plow truck, asking only one question: "What is the address?"

Within the hour, the woman's driveway was cleared. She could finally get to her grieving family when they needed each other most.

For the Tocci family, dropping everything to help wasn't unusual. Susan explained that her family grew up volunteering with the Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Company, where they learned to recognize true emergencies.

"We know what needs priority at any given moment," Susan said. "My family will always help anyone that has an emergency."

The response reflects something deeper about the Flanders community. Neighbors routinely show up for each other in difficult moments, creating a network of support that residents can count on.

"Our neighbors always return the kindness when we need it," Susan added. "That's why I call Flanders 'God's Country.'"

Paul and Tom were soaking wet and exhausted from plowing since the previous morning. They didn't ask for payment or recognition, just an address where someone needed help.

The woman got to her family that day because strangers treated her emergency as their own.
