Flight Instructor, 21, Lands Plane on Florida Highway

Emily Shelton was just minutes into giving a student his very first flying lesson when everything went wrong.

The 21-year-old flight instructor was cruising over Pensacola, Florida when she noticed a problem with her small engine plane. She radioed air traffic control immediately, staying calm as she assessed the situation.

"No, we're going to stay high for now so we can at least fly to the airport," she told the tower. But moments later, her confidence faded when a burning oil smell filled the cockpit.

"Our oil pressure is dropping down into the red, and we do have fumes in the cockpit from the oil," Shelton reported. The air traffic controller's concern was clear in their voice as they repeated back what they'd heard.

With oil pressure nearly gone, Shelton declared an emergency. Then the engine began losing power completely. There was no way to make it to the nearby airport.

"I just want to let you know, we are lined up with I-10, trying to avoid the cars," she radioed calmly. Below her, drivers on the busy interstate were about to witness something incredible.

Truck driver Eric Jordan's dash cam captured the entire landing. The small plane descended toward the highway, lined up perfectly between lanes of traffic. Shelton executed a daring maneuver to fly under metal signs stretching across the interstate, clearing them without a scratch.

Both Shelton and her student walked away uninjured. The plane remained cosmetically undamaged. Air traffic control had worked frantically with local authorities to clear the road, but Shelton's skill made the difference.

"During the landing and emergency sequence, I was reassuring the student that we would be okay and that I was doing everything I could to find us a safe place to put down the aircraft," Shelton told Fox Nashville.

She credits her training for the successful outcome. "I've practiced this exact scenario many times, just never thought I'd actually have to execute it in real life," she said.

Jordan, the truck driver, realized how close things came. "If I wouldn't have seen that shadow over my truck and slowed down, he would've been in the side of the cab," he told NBC 11 Alive.
