Floating Cabin in Ecuador Cloud Forest Leaves No Trace

A triangular cabin now floats above the cloud forest slopes near Mindo, Ecuador, without disturbing a single plant below. Architecture firm Baquio Arquitectura designed Casa 6-3 to hover on wooden supports, protecting the rainforest floor while giving visitors an immersive mountain retreat.

The architects faced a challenge: how to build in a remote, pristine location without destroying what makes it special. Their solution lifts the entire A-frame structure off the hillside using a triangular timber support system that required no ground clearing or major excavation.

Getting materials to the remote site could have meant bulldozers and damaged forest paths. Instead, the team chose lightweight timber and polycarbonate panels that workers could carry up the mountain and assemble on location in less time than traditional construction.

The cabin's translucent white walls aren't just budget-friendly. They turn the structure into a living kaleidoscope, filtering green forest light and mountain sky into the interior throughout the day. Large upward-opening shutters invite fresh air inside while framing views of the surrounding peaks and canopy.

Inside, the 6-3 floor plan flows without doors or walls. A compact timber kitchen, fold-away desk, hidden bed, full bathroom, and two outdoor terraces fit into the minimal footprint. Every element serves a purpose, proving that small spaces can feel open and uncluttered.

The design intentionally stays temporary for now. Owners can later swap the polycarbonate exterior for more durable materials like treated hardwood or metal panels, transforming the retreat into a permanent home without rebuilding from scratch.
