Florida Firefighters Rescue Drowning Coyote Pup From Lake

A man standing by his backyard lake in Cape Coral, Florida heard a splash and saw what looked like a dog struggling in the water. Without hesitation, he jumped in to help.

His shouts for help brought neighbors running, and soon firefighters arrived at Britannia Lake for what they assumed would be a routine dog rescue. But the frightened animal kept swimming from one side of the lake to the other, making the rescue far more challenging than anyone expected.

"The firefighters would drive to one side of the lake to help him, but when they got there, he would swim back to the other side," said Andrea Schuch from the Cape Coral Fire Department. The team had to keep circling the lake, chasing their exhausted target.

That's when neighbor Denae Judd grabbed her kayak and paddled out to help. She spotted something the firefighters couldn't see from shore: the animal had squeezed into a tiny gap between a seawall and a dock.

With Judd's help, the rescuers carefully pulled the waterlogged animal from his hiding spot. A gloved firefighter finally lifted him to safety, and that's when everyone got their surprise.

They hadn't rescued a dog at all. Staring back at them was a young, exhausted coyote.

"Everyone was quite surprised to find out it was a coyote," Schuch said. "With over 400 miles of canal, dogs fall into the water pretty regularly. It has never ended up being a coyote before, though!"

The firefighters noticed the young coyote looked thin and completely spent from his ordeal. Rather than release him immediately, they called the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) to make sure he got proper care.

This story captures something beautiful about human nature: when we see someone struggling, we help first and ask questions later. That Good Samaritan didn't know he was jumping into a lake for a wild coyote. The firefighters didn't know they'd spend their morning chasing a confused pup back and forth across the water. And Denae Judd didn't know she'd be paddling her kayak to rescue wildlife that day. They all just saw a life that needed saving.

CROW's staff confirmed the coyote is about 12 weeks old and underweight, but they're optimistic about his recovery. Once he's strong enough, they'll return him to the wild where he belongs.

For now, the resilient pup is getting the second chance he needs, thanks to a community that refused to give up on him.
