Florida Firefighters Save Dog From Commercial Fire

A dog that stopped breathing during a commercial fire in Fort Pierce is alive today because firefighters refused to leave anyone behind.

St. Lucie County Fire District crews responded to heavy smoke pouring from a building near Sunrise Boulevard and Virginia Avenue on Thursday morning around 10:35 a.m. While battling the flames and evacuating people, firefighters knew something else needed their help.

Thick smoke made it nearly impossible to see inside the structure. But the crew pulled out their thermal imaging camera, a tool that detects heat signatures through smoke and darkness, and spotted the dog still inside the burning building.

Firefighters pulled the unconscious animal from the smoke-filled structure and immediately began emergency care. The dog wasn't breathing when rescuers first reached it, but the team didn't stop working.

Within minutes of receiving oxygen and medical attention at the scene, the dog began breathing again. The pup survived what could have been a tragic ending to an already dangerous situation.
