Florida Hits 500K EVs Sold Despite Charging Gaps
Florida just crossed half a million electric vehicles sold, leading the entire Southeast in EV adoption. The challenge now isn't getting people to buy them but building enough charging stations to keep the momentum going.
Florida has quietly become an electric vehicle powerhouse, with over 500,000 EVs now cruising its roads and more residents making the switch every day.
A new year-end report from the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy reveals the Sunshine State leads the entire Southeast in EV sales. But there's a catch: the charging infrastructure isn't keeping pace with the surge in demand.
Florida currently has only about eight fast-charging plugs for every 1,000 electric vehicles on the road. That's below the regional average and creating gaps that could slow down what many experts call the greatest economic development opportunity the region has ever seen.
Stan Cross, the alliance's electric transportation director, says consumer interest isn't the problem. The state needs to close those charging gaps and prepare solutions like mobile fast chargers that can help during hurricane evacuations.
The infrastructure gap got worse when Florida lost out on $44 million in federal funding for charging stations because the state didn't act quickly enough to secure the money.

The Bright Side
Despite these hurdles, EV drivers remain incredibly loyal to their vehicles. A staggering 96% of current EV owners plan to buy another electric vehicle, showing extreme satisfaction with the technology.
Among all car shoppers in the market for a new vehicle, about 25% say they're very likely to choose an EV. That's holding steady even after federal tax credits ended and tariff uncertainty entered the picture.
Most EV drivers say they would never return to a gas-powered car, pointing to lower maintenance costs, better performance, and the convenience of charging at home. Globally, one in four vehicles sold last year was electric, showing the transition is accelerating worldwide.
Cross believes if state leaders work with manufacturers to reduce political uncertainty and create a stable market environment, Florida will attract even more jobs and investment in the growing EV sector.
The message is clear: Floridians love their electric vehicles, and with the right infrastructure support, the state's EV revolution is just getting started.
