Karl Craig in wheelchair at ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital surrounded by celebrating staff members

🦸 Hero Alert

Karl Craig lost his leg and endured 18 surgeries after a devastating crash last October. Now he's headed home with new goals: walking his daughters down the aisle.

After six seconds changed his life, Karl Craig spent 102 days learning to live again.

The 39-year-old Citrus County worker was crossing U.S. 19 in his work vehicle last October when a truck ran a red light and struck him. He remembers joking with first responders, asking them to roll him over because he couldn't breathe lying on his stomach.

Those were his last memories before waking up to a new reality. Eighteen surgeries repaired his spine and pelvis, but doctors couldn't save his left leg.

When Craig arrived at ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital in Lecanto, he couldn't even sit up straight. "He had no trunk control, nothing," said Becky Beattie, the hospital's director of nursing. "It was very scary."

Three hours of daily therapy became Craig's new routine. The man who could barely lift a water bottle in January was wheeling himself down hallways by May, 130 pounds lighter and determined to keep moving forward.

His 13-year-old son, who struggled to visit him in those early days, now can't wait for Dad to come home. His daughter sat by his hospital bed for 18 straight days after the accident.

Craig fought through depression by finding inspiration in ClearSky's monthly amputee support group. "There's a couple people missing both legs who get up and walk better than some people with both legs," he said. "Technology has come a long way."

He also leaned on humor. "I'm a jokester, so I joke around with the nurses or staff a little bit and they joke back," Craig said. "It's kind of therapy to laugh."

Why This Inspires

Karl Craig's journey shows what the human spirit can accomplish when hope meets hard work. He arrived at rehab unable to move and is leaving with plans to drive again, return to outdoor work, and most importantly, walk his two daughters down the aisle someday.

On May 5, ClearSky staff gave him a hero's sendoff with pom-poms, tambourines, music and tears. His father picked him up in a white convertible Mustang for the ride home.

Craig admits he's scared about managing without six staff members watching over him, but his wife Ali will be there. "She's my everything and I trust her with my life," he said.

His message to others facing impossible odds is simple: progress must be earned, one day at a time.
