Florida Opens First Landfill-to-Clean-Gas Plant

A new facility in Vero Beach, Florida is capturing gas that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere and turning it into fuel that powers vehicles across the region.

Nopetro Energy officially opened southern Florida's first landfill gas to renewable natural gas facility at the Indian River County landfill. The plant captures methane, purifies it, and feeds the clean fuel directly into Florida City Gas' existing pipeline network.

The technology solves two problems at once. Landfills naturally produce methane as waste breaks down, and that gas typically escapes into the air. Now that same methane becomes renewable natural gas that can fuel trucks, buses, and other vehicles.

For Nopetro, the project creates a complete cycle from production to pump. The company generates its own renewable fuel and delivers it straight to its own fueling stations across the area.

"This project represents a major milestone for Nopetro and the region," said Jorge Herrera, CEO of Nopetro Energy. "We can now generate and supply our own RNG directly to our fueling stations, which strengthens reliability, reduces costs and allows us to control quality."

The Vero Beach facility demonstrates how waste facilities can become energy producers instead of just disposal sites. Communities across Florida and beyond are watching to see how the model performs.
