Florida Teacher Leaves Hospital 48 Hours After Massive Stroke

Todd Meiklejohn was getting ready for work on an August morning when intense pain struck without warning. The Florida teacher collapsed in his bathroom, paralyzed on his right side and unable to see through one eye.

The avid cyclist and accomplished athlete kept trying to stand, but his body wouldn't cooperate. "I just kept falling," he recalled. "I just didn't have enough strength."

For 45 minutes, Meiklejohn lay helpless on the floor. Then his wife, a nurse who had left earlier for the gym, made a choice that would save his life. She came home on her way to work.

She found her husband on the floor and immediately called 911. Paramedics rushed him to Miami Neuroscience Institute at Baptist Health, where doctors discovered he was having a massive stroke.

Dr. Guilherme Dabus, the interventional neuroradiologist who treated Meiklejohn, knew every second mattered. "Time is brain," he explained.

During a stroke, the brain loses its blood supply and oxygen. The longer that lasts, the greater the risk of permanent damage.

Doctors performed a mechanical thrombectomy, using a catheter to physically remove the blood clot blocking circulation to Meiklejohn's brain. Just 38 minutes after his wife's 911 call, the procedure was underway.

The speed made all the difference. Almost immediately after the procedure, Meiklejohn could speak and move his right side again. Less than 48 hours after his stroke, he walked out of the hospital.

"I remember Dr. Dabus coming in and saying, 'You're a miracle,'" Meiklejohn said. "I'm one of the lucky patients to say I'm blessed that I was able to walk out and tell this story."

Why This Inspires

Doctors still needed to solve a puzzle: why had a healthy, active man in his mid-50s suffered such a serious stroke? Tests revealed a patent foramen ovale, a small opening between his heart's upper chambers that normally closes after birth. In rare cases, this opening can provide a pathway for blood clots to reach the brain.

After a minimally invasive procedure to close the opening, Meiklejohn's risk of another stroke dropped to nearly zero. Within four weeks, he returned to teaching. Two months after his stroke, he completed a 100-mile bike ride.

His recovery stands as proof that quick action and rapid medical treatment can turn a life-threatening emergency into a story of hope.
