Folsom Volunteers Build Castle Park Playground in the Rain

Rain couldn't stop volunteers in Folsom, California from showing up to rebuild the playground that defined their community for nearly 30 years. Under gray skies on Friday, crews worked through wet conditions to keep construction moving on Castle Park, the castle-themed playground originally built by more than 1,000 volunteers back in 1996.

The original wooden structure served generations of local families before reaching the end of its safe lifespan. After years of planning and fundraising, the community is now rebuilding it together, just like they did three decades ago.

"The weather may be a little wet, but the community spirit is unstoppable," said Frankie Nelson from Folsom Parks and Recreation. Large sections of the new playground are now visible, with framing and key components taking shape as volunteers fasten beams and position structures in coordinated teams.

But there's a catch. With the timeline tightening and weather continuing to challenge the build, Folsom Parks and Recreation is making an urgent call for more volunteers this weekend. Anyone can drop in between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. through Sunday, April 12 to help finish the project.

No construction experience is required, though people with trade skills are especially encouraged to join. Participants just need to wear closed-toe shoes and bring water, while meals are provided on site.

The $1 million project combines city capital funds, Measure A funding, and community donations. The new design preserves the signature castle theme while adding modern safety features, improved accessibility, and materials built to last.

Hundreds of volunteers have already participated throughout the week, but more than 2,000 shifts remain to complete the six-day build. Behind the scenes, crews have already finished grading, utility installation, and ADA-compliant sidewalk work along Prewett Drive.

The Ripple Effect

This rebuild represents more than new playground equipment. It's proof that communities still come together for projects bigger than themselves, creating gathering places where families will make memories for another generation.

The original Castle Park became a defining feature of Folsom, hosting everyday play and milestone moments for nearly three decades. Now, through volunteer labor and community support, that legacy continues with a playground designed to serve families for years to come.

After the community build wraps up, crews will install safety surfacing, engineered wood fiber, and complete final landscaping before the park opens to the public in April. City officials are counting on volunteer turnout to keep that timeline on track.

"This project is about bringing Castle Park back to life," Nelson said, reinforcing that rain or shine, the build continues through the weekend.
