Food Influencer and NBA Star Rally for Gary, Indiana

When severe storms knocked out power in Gary, Indiana earlier this month, thousands of residents found themselves waiting in the dark for nearly two weeks. But after food influencer Keith Lee noticed the city wasn't getting national attention, he decided to do something about it.

The storms brought 100 mile per hour winds that destroyed power infrastructure across the predominantly Black city. While Governor Mike Braun activated the National Guard and President Trump approved emergency federal aid, residents still faced days without electricity as the Northern Indiana Public Service Company worked to restore service.

Lee, known for championing small food businesses and BIPOC communities, committed $15,000 in supplies for a community relief event. When Indiana Pacers player Tyrese Haliburton heard about the effort, he immediately matched the donation with another $15,000.

"Nobody was talking about it, and I thought it was crazy so I made a video," Lee explained in a social media post. "And now people are talking about it."

The pair partnered with the Salvation Army, Ace Hardware, and city officials to organize a gathering at Roosevelt Park Pavilion. The event will distribute food and supplies while offering music and a chance for neighbors to connect during a difficult time.

Lee received over a thousand messages from restaurants, food trucks, and vendors wanting to contribute. He opened the event to anyone willing to help their community.

The Ripple Effect

Mayor Eddie Melton's frustration echoed what residents had been feeling for days. "Twelve days is too long for parents to worry about their children, and for businesses to lose revenue," he said in a Sunday video address.

Lee's viral video turned local frustration into national awareness. What started as one influencer calling attention to an overlooked crisis became a community rally supported by professional athletes, local businesses, and volunteers from across the region.

"I know it's not turning the power on," Lee acknowledged. "But it is a place for community. If you want some supplies or need some supplies, come get some."

His message resonated beyond Gary, showing how social media can spotlight communities in need and mobilize real help. Lee promised to continue supporting Gary however he could, saying, "If I can do anything to make sure that everybody knows that we a community and we gonna stand together, I'mma do that."

Sometimes the lights come back on before the power does.
