Ford Escape Returns in 2029 as Affordable Electric SUV

After selling hundreds of thousands of Escapes each year for decades, Ford is betting the beloved nameplate can win over America again with electric power.

The automaker ended production of its gasoline-powered Escape after the 2026 model year, but that wasn't goodbye. According to Ford Authority, the compact crossover is coming back in 2029 as a fully electric vehicle built at the company's retooled Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky.

Ford invested nearly $2 billion transforming the Kentucky facility into an electric vehicle production hub. The new Escape will be one of the first vehicles to roll off the line, keeping its compact crossover size while ditching gas engines entirely.

The electric Escape will ride on Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, a flexible foundation designed to support everything from sedans to pickup trucks. Ford CEO Jim Farley has called affordability a central goal for the platform, which could help the Escape compete on price with traditional gas-powered rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

The Bright Side

This isn't just another electric vehicle launch. It's Ford using a name families already know and trust to make the jump to electric power feel less scary and more accessible.

The Escape regularly sold over 300,000 units annually at its peak, proving Americans love practical, reliable crossovers. By bringing that familiar name into the electric era with a focus on affordability, Ford is betting it can convince mainstream buyers who might have felt priced out of EVs before.

The timing matters too. While federal tax incentives have mostly disappeared and EV demand has been uneven, Ford is taking a different approach by focusing on lower costs rather than luxury features. If they succeed, the Escape could become one of the most affordable electric crossovers available when it launches.

Ford's willingness to learn from early EV struggles and build something more accessible shows the industry is listening to what regular buyers actually need. The company has scaled back some ambitious electrification plans, but they're doubling down on making electric vehicles that real families can afford.

Production starts in 2029, giving Ford time to get the formula right and buyers a reason to stay hopeful about affordable electric transportation.
