Ford's $30,000 Electric Pickup Beats All Rivals on Range

Ford's about to flip the electric truck market upside down with a mid-size pickup that starts at $30,000 and outperforms every other truck where it matters most: going the distance.

The automaker pulled engineers from Formula 1 racing to design what CEO Jim Farley calls "one of the most audacious projects in Ford's history." Their mission was simple: build an affordable electric truck that doesn't sacrifice range for price.

The result is a truck that's 15% more aerodynamically efficient than any pickup on the market today. If you put the same battery in the most efficient gas-powered mid-size truck sold in America, Ford's new electric version would drive nearly 50 miles farther. At highway speeds, that advantage jumps to 30%.

Ford's team treated every inch of the truck like a puzzle piece in a bigger efficiency game. They gave the roof a teardrop profile that makes air flow over it like the truck isn't even there. They made every bolt on the underbody sit flush with the floor, directing airflow around the tires and suspension like a race car. Even hiding the rear wheels added 4.5 extra miles of range.

The company is also tackling the biggest cost problem in electric vehicles: the battery. Since batteries account for 40% of a vehicle's price and 25% of its weight, Ford became the first U.S. automaker to build prismatic lithium iron phosphate batteries. These batteries cost less and create more interior space inside the truck.

Ford claims the new pickup will cost less to own than a Tesla Model Y while offering more room inside than a Toyota RAV4. The company is building these trucks at its Louisville Assembly Plant using giant single-piece castings that replace 146 separate parts with just two pieces.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about one affordable truck. Ford's Universal EV Platform will underpin multiple future vehicles, potentially bringing down costs across its entire electric lineup. When the biggest names in trucks prove electric vehicles can be both affordable and practical, it removes one of the last major barriers keeping everyday buyers from going electric.

The mid-size electric pickup arrives next year, putting sustainable transportation within reach for millions more Americans.
