Former VP Challenges Prosperity Gospel in Church Debate
Nigeria's former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo sparked conversation at a live church debate by rejecting the "prosperity gospel" doctrine. The lawyer and pastor argued that scripture emphasizes helping the poor over accumulating personal wealth.
A heated theological debate brought Nigeria's former Vice President into the pulpit to challenge a popular Christian teaching.
Yemi Osinbajo, who served as vice president until 2023 and is also a pastor, appeared at Rock of Ages Christian Assembly International for a live debate on the prosperity gospel. The prosperity gospel teaches that financial blessing and physical health are always God's will for faithful believers.
"There is no such thing," Osinbajo stated firmly. "There is only one gospel, the gospel of Jesus Christ."
The 69-year-old lawyer countered Pastor Korede Komaiya of The Master's Place International Church, who defended the teaching as biblical. Komaiya argued that God prospers believers who give faithfully, work diligently, and maintain balance between generosity and productivity.

Osinbajo pushed back with a different interpretation. He pointed to New Testament passages where Jesus repeatedly emphasized giving to the poor over building personal wealth.
"The number of times Jesus Christ said building riches in heaven is giving to the poor," Osinbajo noted. He questioned why churches dedicate significant service time to offerings but rarely emphasize helping those in poverty.
Why This Inspires
The former vice president, who has been in ministry since 1996, brought his legal training and decades of faith experience to challenge teachings he sees as misrepresenting scripture. His willingness to publicly debate controversial church practices shows religious leaders engaging in honest conversation about how faith communities can better serve their broader mission.
Both men agreed on core values of hard work, generosity, and faith while differing on emphasis and interpretation.
