Fort Hood Awards $60K to 21 Military Family Students

Eighteen students gathered at Fort Hood's Lone Star Conference Center on May 2 to celebrate something special: their hard work and dedication just earned them a meaningful boost toward their college goals.

The Fort Hood Scholarship Fund awarded approximately $60,000 in scholarships to 21 students this year, continuing a mission that started in 1985. These aren't just financial awards; they're investments in the dreams of military-connected students who face unique challenges as their families serve.

"We want to put them in a setting where they can be the spotlight, to give them the scholarship funds that are going to empower their dreams," said Carydaniel Cegledi, treasurer for the Fort Hood Scholarship Fund. The banquet capped off a year of volunteer work and community fundraising dedicated to making higher education more accessible.

For recipients like Gage Snodgrass from Salado High School, the scholarship means more than money. "It's nice to be appreciated for the work I've done," he said, adding that the award will help ease the stress of rising tuition costs.

Brent Hawkins, superintendent of Copperas Cove Independent School District who helped select this year's recipients, put it bluntly: "There's no way that a kid and a parent can prepare for what's fixing to hit financially in college." Every scholarship dollar helps bridge that gap.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends beyond individual students. These scholarships recognize the sacrifice military families make when serving their country, often moving frequently and facing financial uncertainty. By supporting their children's education, the fund strengthens entire communities.

"Those young folks that were on stage are exceptional, and they are going to do great things in life," Hawkins said. The fund relies entirely on donations and volunteer efforts, meaning every dollar awarded represents someone in the community choosing to invest in these students' futures.

The nonprofit's work proves that supporting military families doesn't require grand gestures. Through steady commitment and community generosity, the Fort Hood Scholarship Fund has created a reliable pathway to higher education for hundreds of students over nearly four decades.

These 21 students now join that legacy, carrying forward the investment their community made in them.
