Fossil Hunter Finds 800-Year-Old Chinese Jar for £20

Jim Isted went to a car boot sale looking for toys for his grandchildren and came home with what could be an 800-year-old piece of history.

The Isle of Wight fossil collector, known locally as "Jurassic Jim," paid just £20 for an unusual pottery vessel at a sale in Northwood. His decades of experience spotting ancient finds told him immediately that something was special about this piece.

After researching his purchase, Jim believes the jar is a rare Yuan period stoneware vessel from the 12th or 13th century. That would place it during the Mongol-ruled dynasty of Kublai Khan, when China exported ceramics across Southeast Asia.

The vessel is what archaeologists call a "mercury jar," though experts still debate their exact purpose. Similar jars have been found at archaeological sites and shipwrecks throughout Southeast Asia, remnants of China's medieval trade routes.

Jim noticed something intriguing about his find. Shells cling to the inside of the terracotta vessel, suggesting it may have spent time on the seabed, possibly from a shipwreck.

The seller couldn't tell Jim much about the jar's origins. He'd purchased it as part of a larger collection but knew nothing about its history.

For someone who's been collecting since age eight, Jim knows a good find when he sees one. His shop in Shanklin showcases fossils and Neolithic axes from a lifetime of discoveries, but this pottery jar ranks among his rarest treasures.

"People have found phenomenal things at car boot sales, but this is one of the most unusual I've ever found," Jim said. His instinct to look beyond the obvious, even while shopping for his seven grandchildren, led to this remarkable discovery.

Jim plans to take the vessel to mainland antiquities specialists for authentication. Experts will examine the jar and analyze the shells, which could reveal where it was originally found and confirm its journey through centuries.
