Missing the comfort of a furry friend can make any new home feel incomplete, especially when you've grown up surrounded by animals.

Jack McCrossan and his three roommates learned their Bristol, England landlord didn't allow pets when they moved in. Then they spotted Stevie Ticks, a beautiful black Sheprador, in their neighbor's window and decided to shoot their shot.

The four friends penned a letter to the dog's owner, Sarah Tolman, asking if they could spend time with Stevie. "If you ever need someone to walk him/her, we will gladly do so," they wrote. They even offered to dog-sit whenever she needed.

"We hope this doesn't come too strong, but our landlord won't allow pets, and we've all grown up with animals," the letter explained. "The adult life is a struggle without one."

A few days later, the boys received a response from Stevie herself (though possibly dictated to her human). The two-year-old rescue from Cyprus described herself as "very friendly and full of beans" and accepted their friendship offer.

"I must warn you that the price of my friendship is 5 x ball throws a day and belly scratches whenever I demand them," Stevie's letter read.

The first meeting exceeded expectations. "She was definitely as energetic as described," McCrossan told Buzzfeed after their first walk together. "She wouldn't stop running!"

Sunny's Take

This simple act of reaching out to a neighbor created something bigger than anyone expected. Tolman was touched that strangers took the initiative to connect in an age when many neighbors never even exchange names.

"In a day and age where people don't really know or speak to their neighbors, it was really nice for them to break down that barrier," she said.

The story sparked a genuine movement. Pet-sharing and neighbor dog borrowing have grown increasingly common in cities with strict pet policies. Platforms like BorrowMyDoggy now connect dog owners with trusted neighbors who want occasional playtime without full-time ownership.

These informal arrangements help reduce loneliness, build community connections, and give non-owners the emotional benefits of animal companionship. In many apartment buildings, they're quietly strengthening bonds between people who might otherwise remain strangers.

While the boys have since moved away, Stevie is now around eight years old and still thriving. She recently earned a spot on the doggie wall of fame at her local coffee shop.

Sometimes all it takes is a handwritten letter to create friendship, community, and a little more tail-wagging joy in the world.
