Four Tasmanian Teens Rescue Three from Deadly Rip Current
When three young people were swept 50 meters out to sea at a Tasmanian beach, four teenage boys didn't hesitate to dive in and save them. One father says his son was just 30 seconds from drowning before the quick-thinking teens pulled him to safety.
Four teenage boys became heroes on Saturday afternoon when they rescued three young people from a dangerous rip current at Blackmans Bay Beach, south of Hobart, Tasmania.
Around 4:30pm, three youths aged 12, 15, and 16 were caught in a powerful rip that swept them approximately 50 meters from shore toward a dangerous blowhole. Concerned beachgoers immediately called police, but the four teenage rescuers didn't wait for help to arrive.
The boys entered the open water and successfully brought all three back to safety before emergency services reached the scene. All three rescued youths were taken to Royal Hobart Hospital in stable condition.
Cameron Marusarz wasn't at the beach when his son Seth got caught in the rip. He received a phone call that made his "mind race" with fear about what was happening.
"I believe my son was worst off out of all of them. He was probably about 30 seconds away from drowning," Marusarz said. "If those boys didn't get in and save him, he probably wouldn't be here today."
Marusarz expressed overwhelming gratitude for the teenagers who helped his son. "They just took it upon themselves, didn't worry about what was going to happen to them if they got caught in the rip, and just dove in to help someone," he said.
His son and his son's girlfriend, who was also among those rescued, are both physically fine but still processing how close the call was. "It's really just starting to sink in about how close it was," Marusarz said.
Sunny's Take
What makes this story truly special isn't just the bravery of four teenagers who saw people in trouble and acted immediately. It's the selflessness they showed by putting themselves at risk without hesitation. These young rescuers were confident swimmers who assessed the situation and knew they could help.
Tasmania Police praised the teens' efforts while noting they were "confident and capable in open-water conditions." While authorities don't encourage the public to attempt rescues beyond their abilities, this incident shows what's possible when skilled swimmers step up in critical moments.
A father has his son back today because four teenagers chose courage over caution when every second counted.
