France Boosts Solar Storage and Saves Households €200 Yearly

Mind Blown

France just unveiled a smart energy plan that could cut household electricity costs by up to 35% while supercharging renewable energy growth. The country is making it easier to connect solar-plus-storage projects and rewarding homeowners who embrace smart energy tech.

French households are about to get a lot more control over their energy bills, and the planet wins too.

The French government just announced a sweeping plan to modernize how homes and businesses use electricity. By requiring new heat pumps to have smart controls starting in 2027, households could save between €150 and €200 every year by automatically heating when electricity is cheapest.

Electric vehicle owners will see similar benefits. The government is working with industry partners to ensure all new EV chargers come with smart features that schedule charging during off-peak hours, saving families another €70 to €100 annually.

But the real game changer targets renewable energy developers. Currently, solar projects paired with battery storage face a 17 MW grid connection limit that has slowed deployment. By the end of 2026, France will allow solar-plus-storage installations up to 25 MW, as long as they don't inject more than 17 MW into the grid at once.

This simple rule change removes a major roadblock. Developers can now build bigger battery systems that store excess solar power during sunny afternoons and release it during evening peak demand, all without straining the grid.

France's energy regulator is also testing new electricity pricing products that encourage people to use power when solar generation peaks around midday. Imagine getting cheaper rates for running your dishwasher or charging your car when the sun is strongest.

The country's major energy players are backing the vision with serious commitments. EDF pledged to install remote control systems in five million homes by 2030. Independent producer Neoen committed to deploying 1 GW of flexible capacity. Octopus Energy France aims to manage 1.5 million connected devices representing up to 6 GW of flexible power.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about individual savings. When millions of households shift their energy use to match renewable generation patterns, the entire grid becomes more efficient and cleaner. Less fossil fuel backup power is needed during evening peaks. Solar farms become more profitable, encouraging further investment.

NW Group is betting big on this future, planning a €1 billion investment to add 1.5 GW of flexibility capacity. The company will even open its platform to regular homeowners who want to earn money by timing their electricity use strategically.

The residential sector alone could unlock massive untapped potential through smart management of heating, hot water, and EV charging. France's nationwide Linky smart meter system already reaches millions of homes, but many of its capabilities remain unused. This plan changes that by integrating meters with home energy management systems.

Industrial facilities will face new flexibility requirements too, ensuring businesses join households in creating a more responsive, renewable-friendly grid.

France is proving that the clean energy transition doesn't have to mean sacrifice or higher costs. With the right technology and incentives, households save money while accelerating the shift to renewable power.
