France Builds Europe's Largest Single Rooftop Solar Farm

Construction crews in northern France are halfway through building what will be Europe's most ambitious rooftop solar project, transforming 128,568 square meters of warehouse space into a clean energy powerhouse.

The 17.5 megawatt solar installation sits atop the Omega building at the Delta 3 logistics platform in Dourges, near Lille. French developer Urbasolar won the contract in 2024 to finance, design, and operate the system under a 30-year lease agreement.

The scale is staggering. Nearly 29,000 solar panels now cover a roof equivalent to 18 soccer fields, all on a single building. By comparison, Germany's 18-megawatt rooftop system spreads across multiple structures, making this French project the continent's largest continuous installation.

Maria Pedicini, Urbasolar's France business development director, says the logistics are as complex as the engineering. Multiple construction teams work simultaneously across 12 separate sections, each requiring careful coordination to avoid disrupting operations below.

The site employs about 450 PepsiCo workers who will benefit directly from the project. Local authorities who lead the logistics hub have long planned this solar integration, betting on renewable energy to power northern France's industrial future.

The Ripple Effect

When the system goes live in late 2026 or early 2027, it will generate 17 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. That's enough to power roughly 4,000 typical French homes for a year.

The Omega building will consume about one gigawatt-hour on site, cutting its carbon footprint significantly. The remaining electricity feeds into France's grid, sold under a contract awarded by the French Energy Regulation Commission.

This project proves that existing infrastructure can become climate solutions without consuming new land. Rooftops across Europe represent millions of square meters of untapped solar potential, sitting empty above warehouses, factories, and shopping centers.

France continues expanding its renewable energy capacity as it works toward carbon neutrality goals. Large-scale rooftop installations like this one show how industrial spaces can generate clean power while maintaining their primary functions.
