France Cuts Solar Tariffs as Rooftop Power Shifts Focus

France just made a major shift in how it pays people for rooftop solar power, and it's actually a sign of progress in the clean energy revolution.

Starting April 1, the country's energy commission lowered the rates it pays for solar electricity from medium-sized systems. Installations between 9 kW and 36 kW will now receive €0.805 per kilowatt-hour, while larger systems up to 100 kW get €0.70 per kilowatt-hour.

The rates for surplus electricity, what people don't use themselves, dropped even more to €0.473 per kilowatt-hour. For the smallest systems under 9 kW, surplus compensation was eliminated entirely in 2025.

But here's why this isn't bad news. The lower rates reflect something exciting happening across France: people are choosing to use their own clean power instead of selling it back.

French homeowners and businesses are investing in battery storage and electrifying their homes to maximize the solar energy they generate. Instead of relying on payments for excess electricity, they're building systems that make them more energy independent.

The government is supporting this shift with investment grants. Systems under 9 kW receive €80 per kilowatt, while mid-range installations get up to €120 per kilowatt to help offset upfront costs.

The Bright Side

This pricing change shows France's solar market is maturing in exactly the right direction. When solar was new and expensive, high payments helped jumpstart adoption. Now that the technology is affordable and proven, the focus is shifting to smarter energy use.

The move toward self-consumption means more people are taking control of their energy bills and reducing their carbon footprints simultaneously. Paired with home batteries, rooftop solar becomes a reliable power source that works even when the sun isn't shining.

France is also streamlining how larger projects get funded. Systems between 100 kW and 500 kW now compete through a simplified tender process. The first round in late 2025 awarded 43.5 megawatts of capacity, showing strong demand for commercial-scale solar.

The real win here isn't about government payments, it's about solar power becoming so practical and affordable that people want to generate and use their own clean electricity every single day.
