France Solar Gigafactory to Produce 10M Panels Annually

Europe is getting serious about making its own solar panels again, and a massive new factory in France just got the funding to make it happen.

Water technology company Ecolab announced it's investing $116.5 million in HoloSolis, a solar gigafactory planned for Hambach in northeastern France. The facility will produce up to 10 million solar panels annually, supporting Europe's push to build local clean energy manufacturing instead of relying on overseas suppliers.

The investment came during France's Choose France Summit, where companies announced a combined $108 billion in new projects. Ecolab CEO Christophe Beck said the company is backing businesses that are reimagining what European industry can be.

"This is precisely our mission: to demonstrate that economic performance and sustainability are not opposing goals, but rather the two pillars of a resilient, future-oriented industry," Beck said.

HoloSolis already has backing from other major players including solar giant Trina Solar, Cales Technologies, and Forming AG. Together, they're betting that Europe can compete in the global solar market while creating thousands of manufacturing jobs.

Ecolab is also putting money into GravitHy, a separate project that will produce low-carbon iron using hydrogen instead of coal. That facility, planned for the southern port town of Fos-sur-Mer, will make 2 million tonnes of cleaner iron each year starting in 2030.

The Ripple Effect

These projects represent more than just new factories. They're part of a broader movement to prove that Europe can manufacture clean energy technology at home while creating good jobs and cutting carbon emissions at the same time.

The solar gigafactory addresses a critical weakness in Europe's energy transition. While European countries have been installing solar panels rapidly, most of those panels come from Asia. Building local production capacity means more supply chain security, faster deployment, and thousands of new manufacturing jobs in regions that need economic development.

The combination of solar manufacturing and green steel production shows how different clean industries can support each other. Both need massive amounts of clean energy, both create skilled jobs, and both help traditional industrial regions transition to a low-carbon economy.

As Europe races to meet its climate goals, investments like these prove that going green doesn't mean giving up on making things.
