France to Cover Obesity Drugs for 1 Million People

France just made healthcare history by becoming the first European Union country to cover the cost of prescription weight-loss drugs for patients struggling with severe obesity.

Starting in mid-June 2026, medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro will be reimbursed at 65% through France's social security system. Most eligible patients will actually receive 100% coverage due to related health conditions.

Health Minister Stephanie Rist announced the groundbreaking move will help patients who currently pay around €300 per month for these treatments. The program targets people with a body mass index of at least 35 with additional health complications, or a BMI of at least 40 regardless of other conditions.

The potential impact is enormous. Up to one million French citizens could qualify for coverage, though actual prescriptions will depend on individual cases and doctor recommendations.

France estimates the program will cost the government around €100 million annually at full rollout. That investment addresses what Rist calls "a growing public health challenge and the urgency of appropriate therapeutic care."
