France's First Offshore Wind Farm Powers 800,000 Homes

Off the coast of Vendée, France, 61 massive wind turbines are now spinning in perfect harmony with the Atlantic winds, marking a milestone three years in the making.

Ocean Winds completed installation of the final turbine at its Îles d'Yeu and Noirmoutier offshore wind farm in late April 2026. The project has been progressively generating clean electricity since June 2025, with each turbine coming online as construction advanced.

The numbers tell an inspiring story. The wind farm now produces enough renewable electricity to power nearly 800,000 people annually, making a significant dent in France's carbon footprint.

But this project delivered more than clean energy. During construction, the wind farm created nearly 2,400 direct and indirect jobs, breathing new economic life into coastal communities.

The project helped establish a Siemens Gamesa factory in Le Havre for manufacturing turbine blades and assembling nacelles. The offshore substation was built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, showcasing France's growing renewable energy manufacturing strength.

The Ripple Effect

What makes this achievement particularly special is how Ocean Winds proved wind farms and fishing communities can coexist peacefully. Through continuous dialogue with local fishermen, the company adapted the project to respect existing maritime activities.

The island of Yeu will host 66 permanent operations and maintenance positions, part of 80 long-term jobs the wind farm will support. These aren't temporary construction gigs but stable careers that will sustain families for decades.

France is doubling down on its offshore wind ambitions. The country recently announced its largest-ever offshore wind tender, signaling that this first wind farm is just the beginning of a much bigger transformation.

Ocean Winds is already advancing its next project, Dieppe Le Tréport, which has surpassed the halfway mark in foundation installations. The lessons learned from Vendée are paving the way for faster, more efficient projects ahead.
