Free Electricity Starts Wednesday for 3 Million Australians

Starting Wednesday, households across three Australian states will get three hours of free electricity every single day, turning sunshine into real savings for renters and homeowners alike.

The federal Solar Sharer program is designed to share Australia's abundant midday solar power with everyone, not just those who can afford rooftop panels. Eligible households in New South Wales, South Australia, and southeast Queensland can access up to 24 kilowatt hours daily during peak solar production times.

The free power windows run from 11am to 2pm in NSW and Queensland, and noon to 3pm in South Australia. To qualify, households need a smart meter and must opt in through their energy retailer.

The program works because Australia now produces so much solar energy during sunny midday hours that the grid sometimes has more power than it needs. Instead of wasting that clean energy, the government is making it free to encourage people to use it when it's most abundant.

Households can maximize their savings by shifting energy-intensive tasks into the free window. Running dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers during those hours costs nothing. Electric vehicle owners can charge their cars for free, while families can run air conditioning without worry on hot days.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen says the program takes pressure off evening peak demand while delivering direct bill savings. By spreading out when people use power throughout the day, it lowers costs for the entire energy system.

Victoria announced it will launch a similar Midday Energy Saver program in October, offering free power from 11am to 2pm daily. The state government estimates households could save between $139 and $429 annually, with EV owners potentially saving an additional $674 on charging costs.

The federal government is exploring bringing the Solar Sharer program to other regions as Australia continues building one of the world's fastest growing renewable energy systems. What started as too much solar power has become an opportunity to make clean energy accessible to everyone.

The program requires no upfront investment and no special equipment beyond a standard smart meter. Renters benefit just as much as homeowners, democratizing access to solar savings that were previously only available to those who could install panels.
