French Man Gifts Field to Town for Community Orchard

When Michel Éprinchard inherited an overgrown field in western France, he didn't see a development opportunity. He saw a chance to give his childhood town something that would outlive them all.

Éprinchard donated the entire parcel to Clussais-la-Pommeraie, his hometown of 560 people, with one condition. The mayor and town council had to turn it into a community orchard and garden that every resident could enjoy.

The gift came with a catch: developing the project would cost the small municipality about $12,000. Mayor Étienne Fouché didn't hesitate to accept.

"The first condition is to create a garden with specific varieties of fruit trees," Éprinchard explained to French media. "The second condition, undoubtedly the most important, is that the entire community can benefit from it, shared among all."

Work began last year with residents turning out to plant the first 50 trees. Apple, pear, and plum varieties now dot the once-empty field where Éprinchard used to walk as a child.

This year, another 50 trees will go in the ground, along with hedges, flower beds, and flowering trees. The first harvest won't arrive for about four years, but nobody's complaining about the wait.

The Ripple Effect

The orchard is already doing exactly what Éprinchard hoped. Neighbors who might never have met are working side by side, planning harvest festivals, and talking about making jam together.

"Now we will let them grow, we will monitor the diseases, we will take care of the soil, and then people will come to pick their own apples," Fouché said. The project has transformed from a simple land donation into a living gathering place.

In a world where inherited land usually means dollar signs, Éprinchard chose legacy over profit. His gift ensures that for decades to come, families in Clussais-la-Pommeraie will gather under fruit trees, their children climbing branches planted by their neighbors' hands.
