French Startup Finds Clean Hydrogen Underground for €0.80/kg

Imagine if we could find clean fuel that nature makes for us, hiding in underground pockets just waiting to be tapped. That's exactly what French startup Mantle8 is doing, and they just secured €31 million to scale up their hunt for natural hydrogen buried beneath our feet.

Founded in 2019 by geoscientist Emmanuel Masini in Grenoble, Mantle8 has cracked a code that stumped the energy industry for years. Natural hydrogen exists underground, but finding pure, usable deposits has been like searching for treasure without a map. Until now.

The company's secret weapon is HOREX, a platform that creates 4D images of active hydrogen systems deep underground. Think of it like an ultrasound for the Earth, showing not just where hydrogen sits but how it's being created and replenished in real time. In 2025, they completed the world's first 4D scan of a working underground hydrogen system in the French Pyrenees.

The numbers tell an exciting story. Mantle8 estimates their technology could produce hydrogen for around €0.80 per kilogram, dramatically cheaper than current methods. Their total funding now stands at €37 million, with backing from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the French government through Bpifrance, and lead investor Sandwater.

"Natural hydrogen exists, but the challenge is finding commercially viable high-purity reserves," says Masini. "We've built and patented a technology stack to solve that challenge, and the next step is identifying and drilling the best prospects in our pipeline."

The company uses what they call the Geological Trifecta framework. It identifies sweet spots where three conditions align: active hydrogen generation, continuous natural replenishment, and sealed geological structures that trap the gas underground. This approach reduces the risk of expensive dry holes and wasted drilling efforts.

Why This Inspires

Europe's push for energy independence just got a homegrown boost. While the world races to build expensive hydrogen production facilities, Mantle8 is proving nature might have already done the heavy lifting. Their success could mean cleaner fuel without the massive carbon footprint of traditional production methods.

"Natural hydrogen represents a strategic opportunity for France and for Europe," says Alexandre Wagner from Bpifrance Green Venture. "Mantle8 combines a proprietary exploration technology stack with a clear path to commercialisation."

The fresh capital will fund a two-year drilling campaign across multiple sites. Mantle8 plans to identify, rank, and drill the most promising locations while testing hydrogen volume, purity, and reservoir quality at each site. They're also expanding partnerships globally to bring this technology beyond Europe.

This isn't science fiction anymore; it's geology meeting innovation to unlock fuel that's been forming naturally beneath our feet all along.
