Freshman Breaks 600m Record in First College Race

Aaron Hoffer didn't just compete in his first college race. He rewrote his school's record books.

The Purdue Fort Wayne freshman broke the 600-meter school record at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational on January 30, clocking 1:22.41 in his debut attempt. For most athletes, the first college race brings nerves and adjustment, but Hoffer turned his into history.

The South Bend meet showcased the Mastodons' rising talent across multiple events. Teammate Noah Morris posted the Horizon League's second-fastest 200-meter dash at 21.59 seconds, while Ashton Brann finished strong at 22.23.

Meanwhile, at Saginaw Valley State's Jet's Pizza Invitational, sophomore Tyler Hess competed in his first collegiate heptathlon. The Fort Wayne native tackled three events on day one: long jump (4.95m), shot put (7.81m), and high jump (1.47m), entering day two with 1,741 points.

Hoffer's record-breaking debut captures something special about fresh starts. While experience usually wins in competitive sports, sometimes raw determination and preparation create magic on the first try.
