High school track athletes competing in relay race at outdoor meet in Cottonwood, Arizona

Freshman Jiselle Valdez Ranks Top 12 in Arizona Track

😊 Feel Good

Camp Verde High School freshman Jiselle Valdez just set personal records in three events at a major track meet, placing her among Arizona's top Division V athletes. The 70-member Cowboys track team is proving that youth and teamwork can lead to state-level success.

A freshman runner from Camp Verde High School is showing Arizona what dedication looks like, breaking personal records and climbing state rankings in her first year of high school competition.

Jiselle Valdez currently holds the best stats for the Cowboys in four girls events: the 100-meter run, the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and the high jump. At the Mingus Invitational track meet on April 17 in Cottonwood, she set personal records in three separate events.

Valdez placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.62 seconds, ranking her 12th in the state's Division V. She finished second in the 200-meter hurdles at 52.02 seconds, placing her 10th statewide.

"I started sports when I was in first grade," Valdez said. "Ever since I was little and would race with my friends, I was told I was fast."

She's not the only young athlete making waves. Sophomore Caleb Wall ranks 11th in the state for both 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, setting personal records of 17 seconds flat and 43 seconds respectively at the same meet.

The Ripple Effect

Head Coach Amy Wall has built something special at Camp Verde with 70 athletes on this year's team. Four of her eight assistant coaches are former athletes she coached herself, creating a mentoring cycle that strengthens the entire program.

"It's pretty difficult to make it to the state," Wall said. "We try to take at least 15 to 20 kids every year, and I am pretty sure we'll make that goal again this year."

What stands out isn't just the individual achievements. Junior Ryland Parker, who throws discus and shot put, captured what makes this team work: "My favorite part is coming here to these meets with friends, just hanging out."

Caleb Wall echoed that sentiment. "I just love the team aspect of track," he said. "Everyone's coming together, cheering each other on."

Wall's mother, Lori Showers, was the track coach before her and still helps out. Now in her eighth year as head coach, Wall is seeing the fruits of building a program focused on both performance and community.

Parker holds the team's longest discus throw at 75 feet 7 inches and has her sights set on making it to state next year. Even on off days when her throws don't match previous attempts, she finds joy in the experience.

These young athletes are proving that success isn't just about winning but about showing up, supporting each other, and pushing personal limits one meet at a time.
