From Mexican Shepherd to Olympic Silver: Leonel Manzano

When Leonel Manzano was in middle school in Marble Falls, Texas, his father told him running was a waste of time and he should get a job instead. The kid who'd learned to run while herding sheep with his grandfather in Mexico wasn't ready to give up his dream.

So Manzano made a deal. If his dad let him join the cross country team, he'd work summers to help pay household expenses. His father agreed.

Manzano threw himself into the sport completely. He arrived first to practice and left last, even during the off season.

One of his high school coaches noticed his commitment and did something that changed everything. He bought Manzano his first pair of good running shoes.

That simple act of belief fueled something incredible. Manzano won nine medals in high school and earned a full athletic scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin in 2004.

"In terms of training, I was actually the worst guy on the team when I showed up," Manzano later said. But within his freshman year, he was winning meets, beating upperclassmen, and breaking UT records.

In 2008, at just 22 years old, Manzano qualified for his first Olympic team in the 1500 meter race. Four years later, he made the 2012 London Olympic team for the same event.

During that London race, Manzano ran his signature style, staying toward the back of the pack. "I was in about second to last," he said. Then he thought about everyone who'd supported him and his son who was about to be born.

Why This Inspires

Manzano's story reminds us that talent needs belief to flourish. A high school coach spending his own money on running shoes. A father willing to make a deal with his determined son. These small acts of faith created an Olympic medalist.

From the back of the pack, Manzano made his move. "In my mind, I do remember saying a little prayer: 'God, just help me,'" he said. He passed several runners in the final stretch.

When he crossed the finish line, he collapsed, crying tears of joy. Leonel Manzano had won the silver medal.

After retiring in 2019, Manzano returned to Austin, where he now coaches middle school and high school runners. The kid whose father doubted his passion is now the coach buying the shoes and believing in the next generation of dreamers.
