Full House Stars Bond Over Sobriety Journey
Jodie Sweetin and John Stamos are proving that real friendship means celebrating each other's biggest victories. The former co-stars have supported one another through sobriety, creating a bond that goes far deeper than their childhood sitcom days.
When Jodie Sweetin talks about sobriety, she lights up about one unexpected champion in her corner: her Full House co-star John Stamos.
"John and I really, really connected in a lot of ways over [sobriety]," Sweetin shared during a recent interview on The Dory Jackson Interview. What started as childhood co-stars on a beloved sitcom evolved into something more meaningful as adults navigating recovery.
Sweetin, 44, had her last drink in 2011. Stamos stopped drinking in 2015 after a DUI arrest that he calls hitting "rock bottom."
The two have celebrated major milestones together. In 2019, Stamos presented Sweetin with the Experience, Strength and Hope Award for her recovery memoir "unSweetined" and advocacy work.
"We have been there to celebrate each other's big successes and milestones," Sweetin said. She described following a key recovery principle: "be the result of all of your work, and chances are, people that are looking will find you."

When Stamos honored Sweetin at that 2019 ceremony, he opened up about his own struggles. "Jodie lovingly allowed me to walk my own path and when I finally humbled myself to ask for your help, I realized that the perky little blabbermouth had become the master of wisdom," he told the crowd.
Sweetin revealed that sobriety has been "very freeing" and gave her a chance to discover her true capabilities. "You get the opportunity to become a different person, and once you start actually liking that person, it becomes really hard to go back and continue destructive behavior," she explained.
Why This Inspires
Their friendship shows how vulnerability and mutual support can transform relationships. Stamos and Sweetin didn't just work together as kids—they became lifelong allies who show up for each other's hardest moments and greatest achievements.
Both stars have been open about their recovery journeys, helping reduce stigma around addiction and showing others that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Today, both are thriving in their sobriety, with Sweetin at 14 years and Stamos at 10 years of continuous recovery. Their journey reminds us that sometimes the people who knew us at our youngest can become our greatest cheerleaders when we need them most.
