Game Show Prize Launched Coach's Champions League Dream

In 2002, Valdas Dambrauskas walked off a Lithuanian game show with $725 and a wild plan to become a football coach in England.

This week, the 49-year-old will walk into Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium as manager of Sabah in the Champions League. His journey from game show contestant to top-level European coach is a masterclass in determination and hope.

Dambrauskas arrived in London at age 25 with limited English and big dreams. He knew at 12 he wouldn't make it as a player, but coaching could keep him close to the game he loved.

What followed were eight years of relentless work. He coached deprived children in Finsbury Park as a volunteer and managed semi-professional teams while raising two kids.

But the real story is how he made it all work. Dambrauskas juggled up to four jobs at once: gardener, handyman, newspaper delivery, pub floor polisher, retail worker, and sports manager.

"I was doing two, three, sometimes four jobs," he told BBC Sport. The sacrifice paid off as he earned his coaching badges and became the first Lithuanian to achieve a UEFA coaching license through the London Football Association.

His break came in 2004 when Manchester United Soccer Schools took a chance on him despite his lack of experience. He spent five years coaching residential courses across the UK and Europe.

"That was the best thing that could happen in my life," Dambrauskas said. "I will be forever grateful."

He moved through Fulham and Brentford's youth programs, soaking up knowledge at every opportunity. He attended every coaching course, conference, and meeting he could find.

Dambrauskas' story proves that big dreams don't require big budgets. His $725 prize money wasn't a fortune, but combined with grit and multiple jobs, it opened doors across Europe.

After leaving England in 2010, he built an impressive resume across five countries, winning 13 trophies including the Croatian Cup with Hajduk Split. Now he leads Azerbaijani club Sabah in European football's biggest competition.

When Sabah faces Arsenal in January, Dambrauskas will look out at Emirates Stadium from the pitch. One of his university buildings on Holloway Road once overlooked that same stadium when he was working three jobs and chasing an impossible dream.

"When I hear the word 'England', it sounds like opportunities," he said. "England gave me all this and I'll forever be grateful."
